Australia: Monash Graduate Scholarship at Monash University

The Monash Graduate Scholarship is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international students. Award holders receive an annual stipend paid fortnightly and may also be eligible for allowances, such as an establishment allowance, a relocation allowance and thesis allowance. Approximately 100 awards are offered annually.

To be eligible for an MGS, applicants must:

Applicants are ineligible for an MGS if they:

have already completed a research masters degree or equivalent, unless:
intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate, or
there is a significant change in research direction.
hold a PhD or professional doctorate or equivalent, unless there is a significant change in research direction have previously held an MGS for more than six months, unless in the case of a PhD or professional doctorate candidate the prior award was for a research masters degree are currently receiving another equivalent award, scholarship or salary to undertake the research higher degree, providing a benefit greater than 75% of the MGS stipend rate, or are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash's external mode regulations.

Community College Summit Initiative Program

Program Overview
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State is pleased to announce the Community College Summit Initiative Program. This new international educational exchange program enables individuals from Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and South Africa to study at a community college in the United States to develop professional skills. Eligible fields are Business Management and Administration; Tourism and Hospitality Management; Health Professions, including Nursing; Media; Information Technology; Security and Public Safety; and Engineering Science.

Eligibility

Beasiswa Indonesia Scholarship International diploma sekolah S1 S2 S3 dalam negeri dan luar negeri.


To apply to the program, candidates must:

Have completed a secondary school education;
Have relevant work experience in the field in which they are applying;
Have English language skills that provide a basis for enrolling in academic coursework following approximately 6 months of intensive English language study in the U.S.;
Submit a complete application; and
Minimum Institutional TOEFL score 500 or TOEIC score 650 (only scores less than 2 years old are valid).
U.S. Program
The Community College Summit Initiative Program will provide funding for round-trip airfare to the U.S.; a living allowance during English language, academic, and practical training program components; tuition costs; health insurance; and cultural enhancement activities. Students will be hosted in groups by community colleges competitively selected to participate in the program. Programs may range from six months to two years in duration and may result in either a certificate or an Associate Degree. Students are required to return home at the end of their program and may not transfer to a four-year U.S. academic institution.

Selection and Screening

The U.S. Embassy in South Africa and the Fulbright Commissions in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Turkey are responsible for advertising the program and for recruiting and nominating candidates for further consideration. Educational experts in the U.S. will make selection and placement decisions for the approval of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The division Social and Industrial Ecology at the Department of Geography at the University of Zurich is starting an inter- and transdisciplinary research project entitled "Reducing human health and environmental risks from pesticide use: Integrating decision-making with spatial risk assessment models" in Vereda la Hoya, Tunja, Colombia, S.A.

The successful PhD candidate will first develop a quantitative socioeconomic model of farmers' management decisions regarding pesticide application. Second, he/she will contribute to developing a sustainability assessment tool for evaluating farmers' strategies.

The candidate will be encouraged to develop within the frame of the project his/her own ideas within a highly motivated and interdisciplinary team.

The project is being performed in collaboration with the International Potato Center in Peru and several Universities in Colombia, S.A.

Requirements

* Experience in econometric modeling, spatial econometrics or operations research (or interest to acquire the necessary knowledge)

Hitachi Scholarship Foundation Program 2007 for Master and Doctoral Course

The Hitachi Scholarship Foundation offers postgraduate scholarship awards to faculty members of the universities in Southeast Asian countries who intend to study at Japanese graduate schools as full-time students for Master`s or Doctoral Course in the field of science and technology under the following conditions.

Contents of Scholarship

The Foundation will support the following costs and expenses.
Travel expenses
Economy class round-trip airfare between the nearest airport of the grantee’s university and the airport in Japan and the travel expenses between the airport in Japan and the place of grantee’s research affiliation. Only the return fare will be given to the grantee if he/she is already in Japan


Arrival and return allowance: 50,000 each
Only the return allowance will be given to the grantee if he/she is already in Japan.

Stipend: 180,000 a month

Housing allowance (at cost but maximum amount per month)

For Doctoral Course
Master`s degree holder (or the faculty member who is expected to obtain Master`s degree before the start of proposed Doctoral Course) who wishes to obtain Ph.D. in the field of science and technology at a Japanese graduate school
Below 35 years of age
Firm position or profession in the university

Application procedure

Application shall be endorsed by the President’s office of the university to which the Foundation has offered the scholarship award and submitted to the following address through the said office by November 30, 2006 using the registered mail. Neither personal nor direct application to the Foundation is accepted.

- The Foundation reserves the right to distribute a copy of the above documents to any person for the purpose of evaluation and selection. A copy of the above documents will also be distributed to the proposed Japanese host scientists of the finally selected applicants.

Preliminary selection
The Selection Committee of the Foundation will conduct preliminary selection based on the application documents.

Interview
The preliminary-selected applicants will be interviewed by the representative(s) of the Selection Committee of the Foundation at their universities.

Final selection
The Selection Committee of the Foundation will make final selection after the interview. Award will become effective when the admission of the selected applicant to his/her intended Japanese graduate school has been confirmed.

Communication skill * As the foreign students who conduct their graduate studies and research in the field of science and technology in Japan are normally required to submit their thesis in English unless they have enough Japanese language proficiency, proficiency of English language above 530 points of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is preferred.
The applicant`s health and general aptitude for the environmental conditions of academic and social life in Japan.

- The result of selection will be informed to the applicant through the President`s office of the applicant’s university in June 2007.
End of September Departure for Japan (finally selected applicants only)

- The finally selected applicants are requested to attend the orientation in Tokyo at the end of September 2007 and shall start their studies and research at the graduate school, or Japanese language school if necessary, from October 2007 in accordance with the instruction by their enrolled graduate school.

Preparation for Entry to Japan

The finally selected applicants are required to submit the following to the Foundation to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility. It usually takes one (1) month to obtain this certificate and this certificate is necessary to obtain a valid entry visa from a Japanese embassy or consulate before coming to Japan.
A copy of passport
Thee (3) copies of the photograph with 3cm x 4cm
Record of past entry into / stay in Japan (including number of times of entry)
Admission to Graduate School
The finally selected applicants are requested to make arrangement for enrollment at their intended Japanese graduate schools by themselves. They are generally admitted at first as non-degree students, i.e. research students of the graduate schools, and required to pass the entrance examination of their intended graduate schools.

Accommodation

The grantee is responsible for finding his/her own accommodation.
As some graduate schools have their own accommodations, it is recommended to inquire the host scientist about their availability.

Restoration fee, if any, at the time of vacating a room (normal wear and tear only)
The grantee is responsible for the payment of
1) Deposit which is to be returned later
2) Property and fire insurance

Bank Account

The grantee is requested to open an account at a Japanese bank upon his/her arrival and inform the Foundation of the bank account details sending a copy of bankbook.

Alien Registration

The grantee is required to file application for alien registration within ninety (90) days from the date of arrival in Japan at the municipal or ward office where the grantee resides.

Liaison

The grantee should keep in close contact with the Foundation and keep them informed of any change of his/her address or other pertinent matters.

Report

The grantee is required to submit to the head and/or dean of the faculty of his/her university in home country a progress report of his/her research and other activities every two months with a copy to the host scientist and the Foundation. When his/her research is presented for publication or dissemination, the Foundation`s support should be acknowledged in an appropriate way. A copy of such publication or offprint is requested to be sent to the Foundation.

Insurance

The Foundation will buy the following insurance for the period from the date of the grantee’s departure from his/her home country until the date he/she is admitted as a student of the graduate school or until the date he/she arranges similar insurance whichever comes earlier. The grantee is required to arrange such insurance with the graduate school by himself/herself after he/she is admitted as a student. Illness contracted before the grantee`s arrival in Japan, chronic disease and dental care will not be covered by the insurance to be bought by the Foundation.
1) Death from injury: 15 million
2) Treatment of injury: Up to 2 million
3) Death from illness: 2 million
4) Treatment of illness: Up to 2 million

Japanese Language

It is important for foreign students to know and understand Japanese language to such an extent that they can pursue their study and research at the graduate school and spend social life in Japan. Some Japanese graduate schools require Japanese language proficiency to a certain level. The Foundation will, therefore, support the grantees for their study of Japanese language as described in Clause 1 and Clause 2.

Compliance with Laws and Regulations

The grantee must abide by the laws and regulations of Japan.

Suspension or Termination of the Scholarship

The grantees of the Hitachi Scholarship Award are expected to devote themselves full-time to their studies and research described in their applications and any employment in Japan during the term of the scholarship may not be accepted. The scholarship will be suspended or terminated if the Foundation judges that the foregoing terms and conditions are not observed in good faith or in the following cases:
When it becomes impossible to continue study or research because of illness or other reasons
Poor result of study record
Misconduct

Sumitro Phd/Posdoc Research Fellowship Grant 2007

The United States Indonesia Society (USINDO) invites applications for its 2007 travel/study grant for post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior academics, and otherwise professionally qualified candidates to engage in field research in Indonesia on an economic or political-economic topic. This grant is available to United States citizens and permanent residents in the United States with a specific project relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship is open to an Indonesian citizen with a project related to the Indonesian-United States relationship. Previous travel to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States (for Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not necessarily a requirement. The deadline for the 2007 Sumitro Fellows Applications is Friday, November 3, 2006.

The Sumitro Fellows program honors Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia`s senior economist and advisor to USINDO, who passed away on March 9, 2001. An architect of Indonesia`s modern economy, Professor Sumitro headed the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia, and was later a minister of trade and minister of state for research. Professor Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950`s program of the Ford Foundation which sent Indonesian economists to U.S. academic institutions for advanced degrees. Many attended the University of California at Berkeley and the group came to be known as the "Berkeley Mafia" when its members assumed many key cabinet posts in subsequent decades.

The Sumitro Fellows grants for the 2007 application cycle are $10,000 each.

Sumitro Fellows Application Guidelines for 2007

Eligibility: Applicants for the US Sumitro Fellowship must be United States citizens or permanent residents in the United States with a specific project on Indonesia`s political economy. Applications outside the scope of economics or political economy will not be considered. Applicants for the Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship must be Indonesian citizens with a specific project on any aspect of the Indonesian-US relationship. Applications related strictly to American topics or on non-US or non-Asian themes will not be considered. Applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age and/or physical impairment.

Language Proficiency: Please note that though not compulsory, prior study of Bahasa Indonesia is helpful in conducting field research. Applicant should indicate on the application form if and at what level the language has been studied, both formally and informally. Indonesian applicants must be capable of advanced study in English. Evidence of English fluency may be demonstrated by TOEFL scores.

Notification: USINDO will announce the winner in December, 2006.

Curriculum Vitae or Resume: Please submit a resume or curriculum vitae (not to exceed ten pages) providing full citations of all publications, with most recently published items listed first.

References: Please submit two letters of support. One letter must be from a dissertation advisor, senior faculty member or other comparable advisor.

Waiver of Responsibility: Please submit a signed waiver of responsibility.

Supplemental Information: In addition to the above information, the review committee will consider supplemental information such as writing samples, course syllabi, etc. Materials will only be returned if a self-addressed return envelope with proper postage is included. Faculty members and lecturers are asked to submit course syllabi that do not exceed five pages.

PhD Thesis Fellowship in Leukemia at Institut Bordet University of Brussels (ULB), Belgium

The laboratory of Experimental Hematology (Molecular Immunology Unit) located at the Institut Bordet has a full-time Télévie fellowship to perform doctoral thesis research (initially for two years with the possibility of renewal for a second two years) for an individual with a university diploma in the Biological or Biomedical Sciences. In addition, we seek an individual with experience in bioinformatics and knowledge of statistics and programming.

This research project centers on studies of T lymphoid disorders and hypereosinophilic syndrome. Our role in this interuniversity project is to study:

The molecular basis underlying the loss of T cell receptor surface expression and function in abnormal T lymphocytes.
The specific molecular mechanisms linked with the malignant progression of a clonal CD3-CD4+ T lymphocyte clone in patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome.
The techniques employed in the lab for our biological studies include cell culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, and a wide range of standard molecular biology approaches including protein and nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, EMSA, transfection and transduction, cloning and site-directed mutagenesis, microarray analysis, Western blotting, etc. For data analysis statistical tests (parametric and non-parametric), clustering and class prediction are employed using R et C/C++ as programming languages.

This position is available from 1/11/2006.

The lab is composed of individuals from a diversity of countries and cultures, with English or French used as working languages.
