Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) Post-Doc Position in Population Ecology - Evolutionary Ecology

Applications:
Please send your application including complete curriculum vitae and names of three referees to Prof. Marcel E. Visser at NIOO-KNAW, P.O. Box 40, 6666 ZG Heteren, The Netherlands or g.giesen@nioo.knaw.nl. The closing date for application is 9 June 2010, and the interviews will take place at the end of June.

The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO–KNAW) is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Mission of the NIOO-KNAW is to carry out fundamental and strategic research in ecology.

The Department of Animal Ecology is offering a POST-DOC POSITION IN POPULATION ECOLOGY / EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY (m/f)

Job description:
The post-doc position is part of the NWO-VICI project Adapting to a warmer world: phenology, physiology and fitness. In this project, we study selection on phenotypic plasticity in timing of reproduction in great tits in relation to global climate change. There are five integrated subprojects ranging from quantitative genetics, population dynamics and reproductive physiology to genomics. Four of these subprojects are underway and we are now looking for a post-doctoral candidate for the fifth subproject on population dynamics. This project will be carried out in collaboration with Prof Bernt-Erik Saether (NTNU, Trondheim, Norway) and Dr Stephanie Jenouvrier (CNRS, France & WHOI, USA).

Project description:
The aim of the project is to develop an eco-evolutionary population dynamic model for the great tit to predict the effects of climate change on population viability. We will use climate projections from selected Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs) for a range of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenarios to predict the phenology of the birds (taking evolutionarily processes into account) and of their prey (taking ecological processes into account). The resulting phenological (mis)match will affect demographic rates and thereby population viability. Ultimately, we will calculate the critical rate of climate change that populations can cope with.

Requirements:
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in Population Ecology, Evolutionary Ecology or Animal Ecology and with mathematical modelling and statistical skills. A limited amount of fieldwork may be part of the project.

Appointment:
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum of 2 years. The gross salary starts at € 2.861,- per month, scale 10.4, Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-Nederlandse Universiteiten), excluding 8% holiday pay and a year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.
Information:
Additional information about this position is available upon request from Prof. Marcel E. Visser (m.visser@nioo.knaw.nl or +31-26-4791253), head of department Animal Ecology. More information about the NIOO can be found on our website (www.nioo.knaw.nl).

Math Online tutoring Solution

Young children frequently don't empathise why they need to learn math. This information may answer as a guide to help parents explain why math is a such an significant part of their child's education. When children how valuable math can be to them you bet they can apply specific math sciences to real life situations, they might work harder and perform better. Online math tutoring could help solve your child's Math problems by allowing them with a hard knowledge of mathematics in some respects they understand. Online math tutoring offerings the individualized attention that many students need to succeed. Read on to learn about how to find your child math help through online tutoring for Homework help.

On the other Student, algebra lessons at school sound a actual bore. Students are brainsick by everything, except the lesson at hand. Worse still, the instructor herself may not know the correct techniques of clearly teaching algebra (I've known teachers who just stand in front from the black board at algebra tutorials and write-off the questions/answers). Online algebra help tutorial is highly useful in complementing a child's studies at school. Free Algebra help can be found online, to help your problem.

Math is an significant subject but often students are carrying out the motions without interpreting the concepts. Mathematics is simple if students have the basic units and are able to learn it concretely and not abstractly. Also often starting in kindergarten, students are taught accession with pencil and paper. There are no manipulatives to demonstration to the student the concept of one or to a higher degree one. Often the educatees are counting dots on a piece of paper but without touching and seeing they are difficult for many educatees to grasp.

Acquiring how to solve fractions is an important aspect of solving mathematical problems. Students across grades struggle with solving various types of fraction problems which include quadratic and linear equations, polynomials and algebraic equations. TutorVista's Math tutors will make solving fractions easy for yo. A resource provided by Discovery Education to guide students and provide Homework help to students of all grades in all subject areas.

ETH Zurich PhD Studentship in Building Material

Application deadline: Jun 20, 2010
PhD Studentship in Building Material, ETH Zurich, Swiss
At ETH Zurich, Department of Civil Engineering, Institute for Building Materials,
Field(s): material physics

Job description:
A position for a PhD position is available at ETH Zürich, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in the new group of Micro-structure and Rheology, headed by Emanuela Del Gado, of the Institute for Building materials (http://www.ifb.ethz.ch).

The research will focus on the development of mesoscopic models and numerical experiments to investigate the rheology and mechanics of gels and glassy suspensions of interests for smart engineering materials (cement gels, nano-composite suspensions ...). The activity is part of an international and interdisciplinary research framework, including theoretical and experimental leading groups in the field of engineering materials. It is fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

ETH offers an exciting working environment and a competitive salary. The position will be available from July the 1st, 2010.

Interesting candidates will have a Master degree in physics, mathematics, physical chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field.

UPMC PhD Studentship in Theoretical Combustion

Application deadline: Jun 01, 2010
PhD studentship in theoretical combustion, UPMC, France At University Pierre et Marie Curie Paris 6, Turbulence group Field(s): fluid dynamics.

Keywords: Turbulence, Theory, reactive flows, numerical simulations.

Job description:
This position would concern theoretical/numerical modelling of combustion dynamics. The aim of the modelling work is to establish physical-sound mathematical models which are capable to shed some light on present issues for reliable design of combustion. An unresolved fundamental issue is the relative importance of hydrodynamics (turbulence) compared to chemical kinetics on the combustion process. First, the mathematical and physical structure of the advection-reaction-diffusion equation that is typical for combustion phenomena will be studied.

In a second time, the complete compressible Navier-Stokes equation and the modelled reaction-diffusion equation previously analysed will be coupled. The work will use various experiments as basis for verifying the modelling. The experiments will be mainly from experimental research carried out at the department by the means of a rapid-compression machine.

The work will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Rome `La Sapienza`.

Applications are now invited for the position and are tenable as soon as possible. Candidates are expected to have a degree in Physics, mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline; Candidates who are also skilled in fluid mechanics, dynamical systems and numerical methods are strongly encouraged.

Please send your applications, including a CV possibly with a list of references, as a single PDF-file by email to the address given below.
