How to write a structured essay

Category: Scholarship tips

How to write a structured essay

During your academic work, or even as part of your application, you will have to write essays on different topics. It is well to know that the generally accepted way of writing these essays demands compliance to a number of "academic writing" rules, mostly related to the structure of the essay. Some of these rules are outlined below.

Even when assigned, the topics on which the essay should be written are generally quite broad, allowing the narrowing of the topic. You should first do some research and try to get an idea about what has been written on the topic so far. Most often, your essay will build on, analyse or criticize one or more pieces of work, while building an own position.

In the introduction, you should clearly state the subject you are going to deal with, the narrowed topic, if any, and the position you are going to take. Specifying the position (thesis statement) is one of the most difficult parts of writing a structured essay. In the end, you should be able to state in one phrase what your thesis is. It should be narrow, specific and clear. You should not promise to analyse, review, interrogate or examine a problem, but to find and defend a specific side in the debate. As an example, a good thesis sounds like "I will argue that the differences in economic status between the countries in transition are the result of economic policy options made at the beginning of the transformation process", rather than "I wish to analyse the differences in the economic well-being of countries in transition". Version A takes a stand, defends it and by introducing a new idea, contributes to the debate, while version B merely points to some facts. The thesis statement is one of the few places in the essay where it is acceptable to use the first person writing, while most of the rest should be written in the third person. Announcing the organisation of the essay is what follows the thesis statement in the introduction. Depending on the size of the essay, you will develop a number of arguments to defend your thesis. It is advisable to enumerate those arguments in the paragraph following the thesis statement. ' Three arguments defending the thesis will be presented. First, it will be pointed out that ... . The second argument developed will be that ... . Finally, it will be proved that ... '

The body of the essay should discuss the arguments you presented, preferably in the order that you have announced. Each chapter/paragraph starts in a well-written essay with a ォtopic sentenceサ, restating the argument and the author's position to it. In case you use chapters, give them names that respect the structure and make the lecture easier. The discussion should follow the statement of each argument in a manner resembling the overall organisation of the essay: facts, ideas, and opinions of authorities in the field, as well as own reasoning should be brought in the discussion one by one. In the end, it should be examined whether the argument survived the debate or not, inside a conclusive sentence/paragraph.

Conclusions. When all the arguments have been presented and discussed, the essay closes the end, and you should be able to present the conclusions. If the essay has been well written and organised, the arguments have been proved and, together, they prove your thesis. You only have to show that, note the progress that has been made in the research of the examined subject, mention its possible implications.

A possible, but not mandatory section, usually met in academic papers on more important dimensions, is the limitations. Here you can note the limitations of your reasoning, assumptions held true, but which if proved wrong could invalidate your conclusions, aspects that have not been brought under scrutiny, possible conditions that could limit the impact of your conclusions, etc.

The specified size of the essay is, unless otherwise stated, under the +-10% rule. That is, the entire text should not be shorter or longer than the suggested size with more than 10% of that size. Ex: for a 3000 words essay, it is acceptable to write 2700-3300 words. Use the Word's Word Count function to see the size of your essay measured in words.

In some, very very rare cases, it is very difficult to reduce your position in the essay to a thesis. It is acceptable in such cases, for reasons of clarity, to replace the thesis with a research question, that should meet the same requirements, with the exception of the fact that the author postponed taking a stand until the end of the paper. We do not recommend such an approach; still, if it happens, make sure you directly address and answer the research question in the closing of your essay. The reason we support these strict rules that, we admit, make writing rather boring, is simply put, quantity. Think how many essays will read the examiner or university recruiter, essays that have to say more or less the same thing. You surely want under these conditions, in order to increase your chances, to make the lecturer痴 mission as easy and pleasant as possible, don't you? This is why we recommend you to enforce those rules.

An academic essay necessarily contains a bibliography, where you quote all the sources used. Western universities tend to be very rigid with plagiarism rules. So quote every source you have used. In the body of the essay, avoid lengthy citation, use paraphrasing - saying with your own words what other guy said before. If you quote, make it clear, and give the source! In any case, referencing should be used only to start discussing an argument, never to end it.

In some essays, like those that you write when applying for an MBA, you have to answer question like What would you do if you were the manager of a plant and why ? . In this situation, the rules explained above do not apply that rigidly. You should maintain a clear structure, but a bibliography is no longer necessary, since your answer will be more practical-oriented than theoretical.

Good luck My Friend Iwish You Luck!

Netherlands: NFP - Fellowships for master's degree programmes 2007

Kategori: Beasiswa s2 di belanda

NFP - Fellowships for master's degree programmes - 2007

- Introduction

- Eligibility

- The application and selection procedure

- Deadline for applications

Introduction
The Netherlands’ higher education sector offers a large number of international master’s degree programmes. They cover almost every field of study, allowing candidates to receive a postgraduate education and to earn a Dutch Master of Arts degree, a Master of Science degree, or a Professional Master’s degree. A Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree is an academic degree, usually awarded by traditional universities on completion of a postgraduate research-oriented course of one to two years in duration. A Professional Master's degree is awarded by different types of institutes of higher education and focuses on more professionally-oriented teaching programmes. Professional Master’s degrees are usually of shorter duration than a research-oriented Master's degree programme.

The duration of the programmes varies between 9 and 24 months. An NFP fellowship, which is granted for the duration of the programme, is intended to provide a contribution towards the costs of living, to cover the costs of tuition fees, and the cost of visas, travel, insurance, thesis research, etc .as specified in the NFP booklet ‘Rules and regulations for fellowship holders’. This booklet can be downloaded soon.

NFP fellowships can be obtained for a selected number of programmes. The list of eligible master’s degree programmes can be downloaded (as pdf, 109 kB). It should be noted that this list is a provisional list, based on a survey conducted among all potential Dutch providers in early 2006. This website should be consulted for the latest information, because information may be altered and programmes might be added well into 2007.

Eligibility
A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship for a master’s degree programme must:

be a national of and working in one of the 57 developing countries on the list;
have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the master’s degree programmes on the course list. This means that the applicant must have met all the requirements set by the Dutch institution;

have completed an NFP Master’s Degree Programme application form and have submitted all the required documentation to the Netherlands embassy or consulate;
be nominated by his or her employer, who pledges to continue paying the candidate’s salary and guarantees the candidate will be able to return to an equivalent position at the end of the fellowship period. Partial payment of salary can sometimes be allowed as an exception to the rule. It is up to the Dutch embassy to decide if anagreement between the employer and the candidate about partial continuation of payment of salary is acceptable. It should be noted, however, that the NFP allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands;

not be employed by a large industrial, commercial, international or multinational organization, which can be assumed to have sufficient resources of its own to finance staf ftraining;

offer evidence of proficiency in speaking and writing the language of instruction. If this is English, candidates who have received their tertiary education in any language other than English must provide evidence in the form of a score in an internationally recognized test, such as IELTS (a score of at least 6.0) or TOEFL (a score of at least 550 points on the paper based test or 213 points on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test). An exception to this rule is made for candidates who have received their tertiary education in the English language, and for candidates who have previously attended a course or programme with a Dutch educational institution, but no longer than four years ago;

be available for the entire period of the programme and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;

declare that they will return to their home country immediately after the study programme has ended.

Joint or Double Degree Programmes
A number of master's degree programmes take place, either in whole or in part, in one of the NFP countries, for example as a “joint programme” or as a “double degree programme”. In these cases, the Dutch institution and the partner institution in an NFP country deliver the programme together. NFP fellowships will be available only for participants originating from the NFP country where the course (or part of the course) takes place and for participants originating from a neighbouring country.
A number of master’s degree programmes take place, partly or as a whole, in non-NFP countries. For these programmes there are no restrictions on the nationality of participants. These programmes also lead to a Dutch degree.

The application and selection procedure
The application and selection procedure consist of the following steps:

Application for admission at a Dutch educational institution:
1) Applicants first apply for admission to the master’s degree programme of their choice. Applications should always be directed to the Dutch provider of the programme. The deadlines for these applications vary. The master’s degree programmes overview (download as pdf, 109 kB) provides the academic application deadlines for each master’s degree programme.

2) The provider assesses the application and decides whether or not the applicant’s educational background and other experience meet the specific requirements for the programme in question. The provider then informs all applicants of its decisions. Successful candidates will receive a letter indicating that they have been (provisionally) admitted. Admission must be unconditional in terms of the candidate’s education and language proficiency. Admission may be granted provisionally, subject to the candidate finding suitable funding for the programme.

Candidates are eligible for a fellowship only if they have been admitted to their chosen master’s degree programme and meet all the criteria. Candidates can only apply for a fellowship for one programme per fellowship application deadline. Being admitted to more than one programme with the same fellowship application deadline means that candidates will have to select one programme before applying for a fellowship.

Application for a fellowship
3) After receiving their letter of admission, candidates can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP master’s degree programme application form to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation. The application should be submitted well before the deadline for applications set by the embassy or consulate (download as pdf, 43 kB). The application form can be downloaded (as pdf, 103 kB). The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate. Some embassies require applications to be submitted in duplicate. In other countries applications have to be submitted to the embassies through local governmental organizations. Candidates are therefore advised to check any local regulations with the Netherlands embassy in their country. Candidates should NOT send their fellowship application forms directly to Nuffic or to the Dutch provider, but should forward them to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country.

4) The embassy or consulate assesses each application against the criteria listed above. Special attention is given to:

whether the application was submitted before the deadline;
whether the application stems from multi-year agreements made with selected organizations;
whether the candidate has presented a letter of admission to the programme in question;
whether the information accompanying the application is complete and correct, and whether the required documentation (such as passport, diplomas and language test) is in order;
whether the programme is on the list of master’s degree programmes starting in 2007;
whether the programme has added value for the sustainable capacity development of the employing organization and the development of the NFP country;
whether the candidate fulfils any other specific requirements set by the embassy, consulate or country in question.
5) The embassies and consulates forward the fellowship applications that meet all of the criteria to Nuffic.

Important news from the embassies.

6) Nuffic decides how many fellowships will be available for each programme. The allocation of fellowships between the various programmes is based on the number of eligible applicants for each programme.
7) The Dutch provider then selects the candidates who will receive fellowships. The provider informs all candidates of its decisions, and applies to Nuffic for a grant.
8) Nuffic awards the grant for the provider to cover the fellowship holders’ expenses, including the tuition fees.
9) The Dutch providers pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the master’s degree programme; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements, and give guidance to the fellowship holders.

Deadline for applications
Academic application deadlines
The deadlines for admission to master’s degree programmes vary and can change throughout the year. You should contact the Dutch provider directly for further information. It may occur that the provider’s deadline for applying for admission to a programme is later than the NFP deadline for fellowship applications. Nevertheless, fellowship applications can not be taken into consideration without a letter of admission to a master’s degree programme.

Fellowship application deadlines
There are two fellowship application deadlines for master’s degree programmes; one for programmes starting in the first quarter of 2007 and one for programmes starting in the third quarter of 2007. The specific embassy deadlines for NFP applications can be downloaded (as pdf, 43 kB)

A letter of admission should be in the candidate’s possession well before the embassy’s deadline for submitting fellowship applications. Therefore, candidates are strongly advised to start the application procedure for admission as early as possible.

There is a good reason why NFP deadlines are scheduled so far in advance. Candidates need time to prepare for a long stay abroad. It takes at least three months to obtaina visa, for example, and other logistical arrangements also take time. The Dutch providers will inform all candidates of their decisions.

Spoken English to be made part of TOEFL from Sep. 2005

Kategori: Beasiswa

Spoken English to be made part of TOEFL from Sep. 2005
Students planning to pursue studies in the United States and elsewhere, will henceforth be tested for Spoken English as part of 'Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

The official new TOEFL will be offered starting September 2005 at secure ETS test centers worldwide.

ETS will begin offering full-length practice versions of the test along with related learning tools on their website, www.toefl.org . The practice test scores will be reported only to the test taker.

The Education Testing Board (ETB) has overhauled the standard 40-year old Test in response to complaints that despite high TOEFL scores, many foreign students were unable to communicate effectively once they join American schools and universities.

When the new version is introduced, test takers and English language instructors will see a whole new approach to TOEFL. It's more than just a test. Test takers will get diagnostic information on their strengths and weaknesses and guidance on improving their scores. The Test will offer learning tools to help people improve English language proficiency.

This next generation TOEFL test is to evaluate the English speaking proficiency of students whose native language is not English and who intend to pursue studies in a college or university where English is spoken.

Those taking the test have to reply orally to questions provided in oral and written format. These oral answers are recorded on tape. Hence, writing is not required. The test fee is $ 125.

Additional information on TSE:

There are two different registration sections under TSE-A and TSE-P. ·

TSE-A is for those who have applied for teaching and research assistantships and have been asked to take the test by university admissions office or a department head. Undergraduate and graduate school applicants can also take TSE-A.
TSE-P is for those who take the test to obtain a license in a professional field. TSE is offered 12 times a year at various test centers throughout India.
The test can be taken on the same day as TOEFL, but is not part of the TOEFL test like TWE

Korea: Information and Communications University (ICU)

Entrepreneur with thousands of foster children
Jakarta (Bisnis Indonesia: 15/09/04) Yudistira Virgus, the gold medalist in the 35th International Physics Olympiad in Pohang, South Korea, and his four teammates in The Indonesian Physics Olympiad Team (TOFI) looked blissful when they received a reward of Rp250 million from Bhakti Tanoto Foundation for their distinguished success. And so did the chairman of TOFI, Yohanes Surya, who received revolving fund for research from the foundation established by Sukanto Tanoto, chairman & CEO of PT Raja Garuda Mas Indonesia.

In other places, some 3000 student candidates passing the National Selection Test for New University Students (SPMB) 2004 fell happy to have a savior providing them the scholarships to study at universities. The scholarships worth of Rp5 billion will be used to buy registration forms, pocket money, and transportation, as well as the first year tuition each of which is worth Rp1 million.

Lecturers of Sumatra Utara University who are now taking doctorate programs (S3) at state universities in Java have also the same benefit because there is someone who bears their tuitions until they finish their studies.

Sukantois very difficult to meet because he frequently goes traveling to other countries. On the one occasion he is taking an extensive course, and on the other occasion he may be going to see his companies spreading in several countries or to see his children studying overseas, three in the United States and one in Singapore.

Why Sukanto is determined to help a lot of people in education? “I can feel the sadness of those who are eager to study but do not have the money. In 1966, during the PKI’s 30 September Movement, I could not continue my study because I had to work to help my parents. At the time, life was very difficult. I want to help successful children who have strong determination to reach their ambitions,” he said.

Businessman with thousands of sponsored children - Sukanto Tanoto's contribution to Indonesian education begun since 1978. He quietly and without fanfare started cooperation with several state universities including UI, ITB, IPB, and Unair Surabaya, giving hundreds of scholarships to successful students. Through his Sayap Garuda Foundation, he still gives the scholarships till today.

“If I count, my ‘fostered’ children would have been thousands. I think I want to hold a reunion someday. I am happy. Some of them have become bureaucrats like a director general, the other has become a professor,” said the man who was born in Balawan, North Sumatra, on 25 December 1949.

So far, Sukanto is not interested in appearing in a media talking about his contribution to education. However, now he comes to the surface because he is very happy to find out that one of his fostered children from Senior High School (SMA) Pekanbaru, Riau, successfully grab bronze medal in the 35th International Physics Olympiad in South Korea.

In fact, the school was just established in 2001. “I am very happy. Though the school is still new, it has produced a successful student,” he said. His Bhakti Tanoto Foundation and Sayap Garuda Foundation have long assisted students ranging from elementary schools (SD) to universities. He also assists teachers in remote areas. According to him, teachers in remote areas should get incentives in addition to salaries from local government so that they are willing to keep staying.

There. Having a motto “no day without learning”, Sukanto keep broadening his horizon by reading books of economics, philosophy, and politics, among others. For learning, he feels no hesitation to spend a lot of money to take three or six weeks courses at well-known universities like Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton. “If I collect my credits, I might have become a doctor. In a year, I take at least two or three courses, “said the clean-looking man. (sumber: sampoernafoundation.org)

Korea: Information and Communications University (ICU)

Kategori: Beasiswa Korea s1 s2 dan riset dan program studi/kuliah/belajar/sekolah di universitas information and communication ICU

Since the mid 1990s, there has been an increasing demand for high-quality human resources with ability of leading technological innovations and developments in the field of IT. To respond to such needs, the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and Korea's IT-related research institutes and IT industrial bodies jointly founded ICU. ICU (Information and Communications University) was founded in 1997 and continues to be supported by the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication and IT industry. There are two schools of engineering and IT-business, both of which focus on IT, and the areas of research and study include wireless communication, ubiquitous computing, bioinformatics, software engineering, and IT-management among others.

The amount of research funds per faculty member is the highest in Korean universities. ICU undergraduate students are selected from the top 1% of Korean SAT examinees and 60% of the students are from Korea's specialized high schools such as Science High School. 15% of ICU graduate student population is foreign nationals, contributing a great deal to the growth of ICU in its academic and research capacity. In addition, all the major courses are taught in English, a rare trait among Korean universities.

Furthermore, ICU has superior, state-of-the-art research, teaching, and residential facilities, built in 2003. Located in Daedeok Science Town (DASTO), Korea's center for research and development activities, ICU is also well-situated to establish cooperative relations with outstanding research and academic institutions.

The ultimate goal of ICU's School of Engineering is to produce global technical leaders who are equipped with superior management capabilities as well as comprehensive technological skills in the field of IT. To achieve this goal, the School of Engineering focuses on developing students' global leadership in the IT industry, government, and academia. An emphasis is also placed on nurturing students' capability to not only solve practical problems and develop technologies required by the real-world, but also perform research and develop global leading technologies.

*homepage : http://eng.icu.ac.kr/*

The School of IT-Business offers intensive programs with a goal to cultivate leaders in the IT business world. The School aims at seeking powerful and effective answers to management problems related to IT business sectors. The programs focus on providing interdisciplinary education in order to foster IT leaders with knowledge in engineering, and offers fundamental courses fromdifferent academic areas including business, economics, industrial engineering, information sociology, and engineering. There are three programs available: IT-Management, IT-Economics/Policy, and E-Commerce.
*homepage : http://biz.icu.ac.kr*

Currently ICU admits international students at the graduate level only while transfer students are allowed in the undergraduate programs as well. The graduate programs consist of engineering and business areas, both of which focus on IT. ICU boasts of excellent faculty with extensive industrial and research experiences, highly-challenging academic programs, superior research centers, state-of-the-art facilities, 100% employment rate, and financial support for all international students. The types of financial support available for international students are Samsung Electronics Scholarship, Korean government scholarships, and research assistantships.

Graduate applicants are required to submit a study plan, copies of diplomas, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation among others. Non-native English speakers must show a proof of English proficiency by submitting a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (CBT 213) or IELTS score of 6.0, for English is the main instructional language at ICU. ICU's institutional code of TOEFL/GRE/GMAT is 4558. The application deadlines are October 31 for the spring term (starting around February) and April 30 for the fall term (starting around August).

Ireland: Postgraduate Research in Food Structure & Health

Kategori: Beasiswa pascasarjana

Postgraduate Opportunities in Food Structure & Health - National University of
Ireland

Opportunities exist for motivated graduates to develop their research skills further in a variety of innovative food research projects based at the Moorepark Food Research Centre, Fermoy, Co. Cork, Ireland. The laboratories are well equipped and the prospective students will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and experienced supervisors. There are currently four studentships available in the area of food structure and health and cheese
science as described below:

Characterisation of polysaccharides as fat mimetics in mixed biopolymer systems using dynamic microstructure analysis.

Polysaccharides are widely used in the food industry as thickening agents and for their fat mimetic properties, whilst milk proteins are particularly useful as structuring agents in many foods.

By exploiting segregative phase separation phenomena it is possible to control the microstructure and phase distribution of mixed biopolymer systems containing both proteins and polysaccharides and therefore to design food structures with desired functional properties. Most phase separation studies have focused on equilibrium behaviour and used small deformation rheological methods to study properties; very few studies have linked large deformation and failure response to microstructural features.

Confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) is a powerful technique for studying the distribution of food ingredients and also the formation of protein networks. Recent developments in micro-tensile and shearing optical stages have facilitated the direct observation of protein-polysaccharide composites during mechanical deformation. This successful candidate will develop and apply dynamic microstructure characterisation techniques to mixed biopolymer systems containing milk proteins and polysaccharides. Rheological and microstructural data obtained will be correlated with data obtained from equivalent biopolymer systems containing fat.

Academic Supervisor:

Prof. Daniel M. Mulvihill, University College, Cork.
Teagasc Supervisor: Dr. Mark Auty, Moorepark Food Research Centre.

Requirements:

Applicants should have a good primary degree (1 or 2.1) in Food Science, Biochemistry, Biological or Physical Science.

Funding:

The positions are funded by a Teagasc Walsh Fellowship of €17,000 p.a. covering postgraduate stipend and tuition fees.

Location:

Sucessful applicants for all positions will be based at Moorepark Food research Centre, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Some time will also be spent at the relevant academic institution.

Starting date:

The project will start at the beginning of September 2006. Students will be required to register for a higher degree at the appropriate academic institution. Application procedure:

Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, detailing qualifications and experience, together with a covering letter stating which position they are applying for and explaining why they wish to pursue this project. Deadline for applications is Friday 18 August 2006. Applications for all positions should be sent, preferably by email, to the academic supervisor as detailed below:
