British College Research Student Awards 2007 at College of Humanities and Social Science, The University of Edinburgh, UK

The College Research Student Awards scheme is designed to attract high quality students aspiring to PhD research in the College of Humanities and Social Science. There are two types of award being offered: a College Studentship, which provides a stipend as well as paying tuition fees at the EU rate; and a College Scholarship, which pays only for the tuition fees at the EU rate. Applicants are automatically considered for both awards. Subject to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years. The College of Humanities and Social Science is now seeking applications for the 2007-2008 academic session.

Award Values

College Studentships

There will be up to 8 College Studentships each comprising a stipend of £11,340 per annum, fees paid (at Home/EU rate), and a research expenses allowance of £420. Applicants who are unsuccessful in obtaining a College Studentship are automatically considered for a College Scholarship.

College Scholarships

College Scholarships pay fees at the Home/EU rate and a research expenses allowance of £420 per annum. Approximately 14 scholarships will be allocated by College competition.

Eligibility

College Awards are very competitive, and only those applicants fulfilling the following criteria should apply:

Seeking to start full-time or part-time PhDs.

Seeking to start in the academic year beginning September 2007. Of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Although candidates with an upper second class honours Bachelor`s degree (or the overseas equivalent) can be considered, in order to be competitive candidates should really have a first class Bachelor`s degree (GPA of 3.7), or 2:1 (GPA of 3.4) supplemented by an excellent Intermediate or Master`s degree.

The quality of the student’s research proposal and any publications will be taken into consideration.

Be fully supported by referees providing strong support for the Award.

Factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account.

If College Award candidates are applying to study topics eligible for Research Council Awards then they must also apply for the Research Council award.

Overseas Candidates

Overseas candidates applying for a College Studentship or Scholarship must also apply for an ORS award. Information on ORS awards (and an application form) is downloadable from http://www.scholarships.ed.ac.uk/postgraduate/internat/ors.htm.

The ORS application form and its supporting documents should be sent to the College Postgraduate Office for us to receive it by 1 March 2007 at the latest. Applications for ORS awards received after that date will not be considered.

Overseas students who are unsuccessful in obtaining an ORS Award should note that the College Studentship or College Scholarship will not cover fees at the higher overseas rate. This means that successful overseas College Award holders without an ORS award will be responsible for financing the difference between the EU fee and the overseas fee.

Overseas candidates who are successful in obtaining an ORS award AND a College Award will automatically have their full fees covered.

Overseas candidates who are successful in obtaining an ORS award BUT NOT a College Award will be responsible for financing the EU part of their tuition fees.
